Drakken Successfully Tested Emerson’s CPE115 Controller Over DNP3.0

April 27, 2021

Drakken’s Automation Engineering team successfully tested Emerson’s CPE115 Hardware over DNP3 protocol, which provides distinct advantages over Modbus and other protocols, even for the average user. Users will usually conclude that the advantages of DNP3 outweigh the additional initial investment.

The demand for improved asset performance and productivity is increasing in manufacturing and infrastructure markets. They require even smaller applications with robust execution performance and a range of connectivity options to real-time application status information and diagnostics.

CPE115 is a high-performance controller that enables equipment builders to improve performance and flexibility of their machines while reducing size, complexity, and cost.

Small Footprint. Big Impact

Emerson’s compact controllers improve process performance and flexibility while reducing size, complexity and cost. RSTi-EP CPUs make it possible to incorporate the entire PACSystems programming suite in stand-alone applications, or as auxiliary control in larger process applications that use RX3i. This simplifies training for operators and maintenance workers and streamlines application development and integration.

Product capabilities - CPE115 supports:

PROFINET (Process Field Net) is an industry technical standard for data communication over Industrial Ethernet, designed for collecting data from, and controlling equipment in industrial systems, with a particular strength in delivering data under tight time constraints. PROFINET was created to deliver interoperability, high-performance communications, high-availability architectures, and advanced diagnostics to help with troubleshooting

These features minimize downtime in operation, and help designers create robust plant-level input/output (I/O) networks which run reliably and are maintainable for the long haul.

PROFINET Advantage

As PROFINET protocol provides I/O interoperability, redundant features, and helpful diagnostics, Emerson PACSytems prefers it, as the earliest industrial protocols relied on proprietary media and components, in part to guarantee performance. As industrial networking transitioned to the use of commercial Ethernet technology, it was still necessary to address the need for always-on automation systems while guaranteeing performance.

PROFINET I/O solutions can provide productivity and performance advantages for virtually any type of control application in a range of industries. PROFINET supports a variety of I/O without compromising system performance and can operate in high-noise environments. Connect to any of Emerson’s purpose-built I/O families through a PROFINET interface for advanced flexibility and performance.

Advanced Security

Without proper cybersecurity in place, industrial controls may be vulnerable to cyber threats. Emerson’s PAC, PLC and industrial automation portfolio enlists defense-in-depth architecture to help secure assets from these threats. The RSTi-EP CPE115 incorporates technologies such as Trusted Platform Modules and secure, trusted, and measured boot. Centralized configuration allows encrypted firmware updates to be executed from a secure central location. And a suite of cybersecurity technology and tools help prevent unauthorized updates, while built-in security protocols help protect against man-in-the-middle and denial of service attacks.

Secure-by-design features include Trusted Platform Module and Measured Boot technology to enable encrypted, digitally signed firmware updates and help stop attempts to introduce malware onto the CPU. These same technologies are included on the PACSystems RX3i product line.

High Performance

DNP3 Outstation Capability

Support of DNP3 Outstation capability for RTU applications in water and wastewater, transportation, and oil and gas pipeline sectors.

If you don’t want to lose valuable data, or carry out extensive detective work to assess whether trends and reports are demonstrating system problems, station problems, or communication problems, then you need a protocol that reliably reports all changes from the field.

Drakken’s Automation Engineering team is just a call away for any requirements for which the end-user demands features such as cybersecurity, time-stamping, unsolicited reporting etc. in the PLC Hardware.

On Time, Every Time - Drakken Guaranteed.
