Celebrating 10 years of ISO certification, Drakken would like to share what this means for us and for global industry.
What is the ISO?
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent body which develops and publishes international proprietary, industrial and commercial standards. It has representatives from 165 countries who together work on creating common standards throughout the world, for almost every measurable thing that comes under the umbrella of industry, technology and manufacturing.
The ISO was founded from the question, ‘What is the best way of doing this?’ Its work began in standardizing weights and measures, and has moved through almost all aspects of commerce, industry and proprietorship that need certain standards to be met to ensure consistency and guarantee quality.
At the hands-on level, the ISO provides the platform to develop practical tools for industry and commerce, made possible through common understanding and cooperation among all stakeholders. It is part of the same bold and forward-looking legacy that came out of post-war Europe – the ISO being one of the first organizations granted general consultative status by the United Nations.
What is ISO certification?
The ISO sets the standards for industry, by common international agreement, and therefore ISO certification declares that a particular management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure has all the requirements to meet standardization and quality assurance.
Companies go through a rigorous and often lengthy process to achieve certification, which can take months or years, involving an accredited certification body, undertaking and completing all application requirements, developing stringent policies and procedures in line with ISO requirements, undergoing document review, implementing ISO processes and action plans, completing multiple detailed audits performed by third party certification bodies as well as maintaining certification by annual comprehensive surveillance audits. Certifications typically last one to three years and are subject to continual review.
What ISO certifications does Drakken have?
Drakken has three of the major ISO certifications: Quality Management (9001), Health and Safety (45001) and Environment (14001).
The Quality Management standard is based on seven principles which revolve around process approach, continual improvement, customer focus, and the motivation and implication of top management. They ensure that customers get a consistently high quality product or service – which is of course critically important.
The Health and Safety standard has to do with establishing, implementing and maintaining an occupational health and safety management system that will improve OH&S, eliminate hazards and risks, including system deficiencies, and address OHAS non-conformities that might be associated with the company’s activities.
Many companies do not have this 45001 certification and many continue using the old OHSAS 18001 certification, but reflecting the company’s forward-thinking attitude, Drakken wanted to be ahead of the curve and achieved this new standard well before it was the obligatory level of certification.
The Environmental Management standard is available to organizations seeking to manage their environmental responsibilities in a systematic way, enabling them to not only fulfil compliance obligations, but achieve and enhance their environmental performance. In its most recent iteration, the 14001 standard states that conformity will help organizations achieve the intended outcomes of its environmental management system, providing value for the environment, the organization and for other stakeholders.
Why did Drakken seek these certifications?
Drakken has been ISO certified since 2011 because we recognized early on that there was a huge importance in meeting internationally recognized standards for the operation and execution of services. Furthermore, we have incorporated all our ISO certified systems into a single Integrated Management System to promote implementation across all offices and systems.
Having these certifications first of all builds customer confidence that our products and services are safe and reliable, being subject to the highest international regulations. The certification also allows us to gain market access across the world and reduces barriers to international trade. With consistent and transparent regulation resulting in saved time and consistent delivery, we end up providing better, more cost-effective products and services.
Drakken has built a world-class documentation and information system based on the principles of the ISO standards it has achieved, allowing all team members to seamlessly realize the benefits of these systems. Our information management system, Lukla, is an intelligent content management system which has been tried and tested in more than 20 countries. Find out more about Lukla here.
Drakken recognizes the many benefits of ISO certification and promotes its principles, so we are proud to celebrate 10 years of certification by the highest body for international standards. We will always support excellence in standards and regulations for all aspects of the industries in which we operate, and we look forward to the next ten years of certification.
